New Dodgers Catching Prospect Ryan January Happy to be in Blue

As the Dodgers’ farm system was ravaged during the rule 5 draft last week, they didn’t come away empty handed. While teams plucked 8 prospects from LA, Andrew Friedman and company added two intriguing names to the farm.

An outfielder from Tampa Bay, Roimer Bolivar, and a catcher from the Diamondbacks Ryan January. After learning about his trade, January took to Twitter to share his excitement.

This kid knew all the right things to say.

The amazing journey continues as I was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Rule 5 draft. … I am humbled and beyond excited at the thought of playing for the World Championship Dodgers organization and can’t thank them enough for believing in my ability to play the game. I look forward to the great opportunity more than anyone could realize. … I officially bleed Dodger Blue!

January joins a deep group of talented catchers in the LA farm system including top prospect Kiebert Ruiz and future star Diego Cartaya.

Welcome to the club, Ryan!

  1. Position change come January (pun intended). Look for Dodgers to move him to first base and/or outfield where he will have a much better opportunity to advance quickly considering how many catching prospects are in front of him. If he is not added to Dodgers 40-man roster next November, he will be eligible for the 2021 rule 5 draft.

  2. Yeah, position versatility will be key for him. He’s seriously blocked by Smith (25), Ruiz (22) and Cartaya (19), of course trades could happen. Love his enthusiasm!

    1. Dodgers also drafted Virgina Tech catcher Carson Taylor in 2020 draft, signed three well regarded catching prospects from Venezuela, and still have Steve Berman, Hunter Feduccia, and Tre Todd.

      1. Happy Holidays! And i am sure he’ll be open to a position change too, as he shows he wants to be here and become a contributor with the big club in the future.
