Likewise, the Cardinals didn’t have anything going for them in the fourth either. Anderson opened the inning by getting Mark Reynolds to ground out and struck out the next two batters.

Martinez continued to shut down the Dodgers in the fifth by throwing a 1-2-3- inning, giving him eight consecutive hitters retired. Despite giving up a single to Bourjos, Anderson had a good inning as well. He picked off Bourjos for the inning’s second out and struck out Carpenter for the third.

Martinez issued consecutive one-out walks in the sixth, but pitched his way out of the small jam by striking out Gonzalez and Kendrick to end the inning and the Dodgers still trailed, 2-0. Anderson opened the bottom of the sixth by catching Peralta looking for strike three.

Callaspo made a nice backhanded stop, spin and throw for the second out and Anderson completed another scoreless inning by getting Molina to ground out. The Dodgers didn’t do themselves any favors in the seventh as they forced Martinez to only throw seven pitches in the inning.

Included in that was Guerrero striking out for a third time on the day. Chris Hatcher took over for the Dodgers in the bottom of the seventh and gave up a one-out single to Jason Heyward. Ending his string of bad outings, Hatcher induced pinch-hitter Kolten Wong into an inning-ending double play.

The Cardinals turned to Kevin Siegrest in the eighth and the left-hander struck out the side, but not before giving up a two-out solo home run to Pederson. It was Pederson’s first of his career off a lefty and it the Dodgers’ deficit to 2-1.

Hatcher issued two walks and recorded one out in the bottom of the eighth before giving way to Yimi Garcia. Peralta continued to provide the offense for the Cardinals as he dropped an RBI bloop single to push his team’s lead to 3-1.

After Garcia struck out Grichuk for the second out, Molina singled to left but the Cardinals were unable to add to their lead as Carpenter was thrown out at the plate by Kiké Hernandez. Trevor Rosenthal walked Ethier and Grandal with two outs in the ninth before striking out Justin Turner looking to convert his second save of the series.
